The minutes of the Planning and Zoning Commission Meeting held January 7, 1997
were presented for approval. Ron Folsom moved to approve the minutes of January 7,
1997 as written without change, and Dick Bybee seconded the motion. The voting was
unanimous in favor. The motion carried.
The first item of business was recommendations for a sign code. Commission members
had the opportunity to review the sign code for Idaho Falls, which Russell Bennion
distributed prior to the meeting. Discussion concerned whether or not to adopt a code
similar to Idaho Falls. Ron Folsom questioned whether Ammon needed one as detailed
as Idaho Falls because it might be unrealistic for small businessmen to comply. Items in
the Idaho Falls Code that might affect Ammon were discussed. Areas for concern were
calculations for the allowable size of signs, political sign requirements and billboard
restrictions. Greg Maeser asked about sign permit fees and it was noted that the City
Council established a sign permit fee of $75.00 per sign on July 6, 1995. Russell
Bennion agreed to go to Idaho Falls to obtain more information. Chairman Murray
commented that it is important that the community make recommendations for a sign
ordinance to protect the community and also to promote a healthy atmosphere for
businesses.
Russell Bennion moved to table action on recommendations for a sign ordinance for the
City of Ammon until the next meeting. Dick Bybee seconded the motion. Voting was
unanimous in favor. The motion carried.
